Finland is a new country. It became an independent state in 1917. Ealier it has been a more or less independent area either in the hands of Sweden or Russia.

Finland lost a large part of the area to Russia in 1945 after winter wars against the most bigger neighbour in the east. Many of these dramatic events are well illustrated in a Finland collection of stamps.

To day Finland is a member of EU and houses 5 million inhabitants. Its a rich country and among many other things famous for art, design and Nokia.

The stamps are numbered logical beginning with number 1 and reaching number 108 in 1929. From 1930 the stamps are numbered with the year first and the a number for each stamp. Only the large number of lion new type issued between 1930 and 1953 do not follow this classification. The lion type have been gathered on one page and numbered with a big L and a number. This is also the case for the few lion overprints.
